What nocturnal (night-active) and diurnal (day-active) mean, with Indonesian examples of animals active at night, by day or at dawn and dusk, each with its source.

Nocturnal animals are active mainly at night and rest by day, while diurnal animals are active mainly by day. Some are crepuscular, most active at dawn and dusk, and some cathemeral, active irregularly by day and night. Of the 250 Indonesian animals in this guide with a sourced activity pattern, 71 are nocturnal, 157 diurnal, 5 crepuscular and 17 cathemeral.
