Common questions

What is PanduanHewan?

PanduanHewan is a source-led guide to Indonesia’s animals in Indonesian and English. It has 286 animal guides with scientific names, range, habitats, IUCN Red List status and legal protection for the 108 species named on Indonesia’s protected-species list, plus 25 cat and dog health guides and a directory of 34 animal welfare and conservation organisations.

Which animals are protected in Indonesia?

The official list is the annex to Regulation P.106/2018, which names 787 animal species; certain marine species are protected by Marine Affairs and Fisheries decrees. On PanduanHewan, 108 animals appear on those lists, including orangutans, the Sumatran tiger, the Komodo dragon, the Javan rhino and the Bali myna. See the list of protected animals with their annex entries. Protected animals list →

Who should I contact about a protected wild animal in Indonesia?

Contact the natural resources conservation office (BKSDA) for your province. PanduanHewan lists all 26 BKSDA offices and their work areas. Do not catch or keep wild animals yourself. PanduanHewan is not an emergency service and does not take reports.

Where do the conservation statuses come from?

IUCN Red List categories come from IUCN data version 2026-1 as republished by GBIF, or from the source cited on the page. A global IUCN category is not the same as legal protection in Indonesia, which is set by ministerial regulation.

Has an expert reviewed the information?

Not yet. Each guide is compiled and checked against the sources it lists and carries an update date. Emergency guides are compiled from official sources and approved for publication by the editor, not by a veterinarian or wildlife expert, and are labelled to say so. If you find a mistake, send a correction with a source.

Does PanduanHewan accept donations?

No. PanduanHewan does not accept or process donations. Support organisations directly through their official websites.
