PANDUANHEWAN · INDONESIA
Schoolyard animal observation journal
An enrichment activity for observing birds and insects from a distance, recording observations and comparing data. Includes a printable sheet.
An original PanduanHewan enrichment activity for observation, recording and reasoning. Teachers adapt it to pupil age, available time and school conditions; it is not an official ministry module.
Activity plan: 35 minutes
Allow 5 minutes for briefing, 10 for observation, 10 for organising notes and 10 for discussion. No account or pupil-data submission is needed.
- The teacher selects a safe schoolyard location, time and boundary. Observe with supervision; use photographs or videos if an outdoor activity is unsuitable.
- Observe from a distance. Do not catch, touch, chase, feed or approach animal nests. Stop and tell the teacher if a situation is unsafe.
- Record the date, duration, weather, animal features and number seen. Write “unidentified” when uncertain; do not guess a species.
- Compare observations with the same duration and location. The number seen is not the entire population; the same animal can be counted again.
- Discuss one difference, one possible explanation and one unknown. Do not publicly share pupil names or animal nest locations.
What is assessed?
- Notes include time, duration, general location and features actually observed.
- Pupils distinguish evidence, possible explanations and unknowns.
- Conclusions match the notes and do not present observation counts as the entire population.
