Many layers, one forest
Canopies, tree trunks, leaf litter, and waterways provide different living spaces. Reading the habitat helps explain why species are not distributed evenly.
The Indonesian context
Sumatra’s Tropical Rainforest Heritage includes Gunung Leuser, Kerinci Seblat, and Bukit Barisan Selatan. UNESCO highlights its biodiversity and pressures on these landscapes.
What to look for
Notice continuity of forest cover and connections with rivers. Forests that look equally green in photographs need not have the same condition or animal community.
Learn without disturbing
Use permitted routes and follow the site manager’s guidance. Keep observation notes, but avoid sharing nest coordinates or locations of species vulnerable to collection.
