Yayasan Orangutan Sumatera Lestari – Orangutan Information Centre (YOSL-OIC) describes itself as a grassroots NGO based in Medan. Its vision is to protect orangutans and their forest habitat in Sumatra. The website describes work with communities around the Leuser Ecosystem and the Batang Toru Ecosystem, home to Sumatran and Tapanuli orangutans. OIC was founded in 2001 as an orangutan information centre.

Understanding its work

The website describes restoring degraded forest in and around Gunung Leuser National Park, joint forest patrols with national park staff, and a Human-Orangutan Conflict Response Unit (HOCRU) that carries out translocations and confiscations with BKSDA. OIC is also part of the Sumatran Rescue Alliance, a primate rescue centre in Besitang, Langkat, set up with BBKSDA North Sumatra, BKSDA Aceh and COP.
