Published focus

Kalaweit states that it has worked to preserve Indonesia's biodiversity since 1997, beginning with gibbon protection. Its website explains that kalaweit means “gibbon” in the Dayak language. Alongside offices in France, Belgium and Switzerland, the site lists Yayasan Kalaweit Indonesia in Palangka Raya, Central Kalimantan. Its work is described in Borneo and Sumatra, including Siberut in the Mentawai Islands.

Understanding its work

The website describes care centres with veterinary clinics for gibbons, siamangs and other animals taken from the trade, and forest protection through land acquisition co-managed with partner villages, such as the Dulan forest in Barito Utara. Rangers from neighbouring villages carry out patrols. Kalaweit states that it does not release gibbons into these reserves because the available territory is limited.
