Quick answer
Key points
- People come first: do not brake suddenly or walk into traffic to reach an animal.
- If the animal or its body endangers road users, report it to the Polri call centre on 110, which takes accident reports.
- An animal in pain or fear may attack. Watch from a safe distance and do not touch it with bare hands.
- For wildlife, contact the BKSDA or the nearest police station. The BKSDA asks people not to handle wild animals themselves.

Start with these steps
- Pull over only where it is safe. Do not brake suddenly or stop mid-road.
- Do not walk into traffic. If the animal blocks the road or there has been a crash, call 110.
- If anyone is hurt, call 119, or 112 where that service exists.
- From a safe distance, note the exact location (road, landmark, direction) and the animal's condition, and take photos without approaching.
- For a cat or dog, call the nearest vet, or the owner if the collar has a number. For wildlife, call the BKSDA or the police station.
- Do not give food, water or human medicines. Wait for a vet's or responder's instructions before the animal is moved.
- If bitten or scratched, wash the wound with soap and running water for 15 minutes, then go straight to a health facility.
What should I do if I see an animal hit on the road?
Put your own safety and that of other road users first. The RSPCA, the UK animal welfare charity, asks rescuers not to put themselves at risk and to keep their distance while judging whether it is safe to approach. On a busy road or railway, stay at the side and note the location.
If the animal, its body or onlookers endanger traffic, call the Polri call centre on 110. Polri says the service is free and takes reports such as accidents. The RSPCA likewise advises calling the police when an animal in the road poses an immediate risk to traffic.

Who should I contact about an animal hit on the road?
For a cat or dog, call the nearest veterinary clinic. Ask whether they can take the animal and how it should be brought in. If the collar has a phone number, call the owner.
For wildlife such as a civet, monitor lizard or barking deer, contact the Balai KSDA (BKSDA) for your province; offices are listed on the BKSDA offices page. The local police station can also pass reports on. In June 2026 a Karangasem resident reported an injured barking deer to the Selat police, who called in BKSDA Bali and a government animal-health clinic vet.

Is it safe to touch or move an injured animal?
An injured animal may feel threatened and react aggressively. The RSPCA says wild animals larger than a cat should not be handled by the public, and small ones should only be approached when safe. Do not touch the animal with bare hands, set bones or dress wounds, or give human medicines, food or water.
Ask a vet, the BKSDA or responders for instructions before the animal is moved. BKSDA Bali asks people to report wild animals they find rather than handle them. Meanwhile, keep dogs and onlookers away, as they add to the animal's stress.

What if I am bitten or scratched?
Indonesia's Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) names dogs, cats and monkeys among the main rabies carriers in Indonesia. It asks anyone bitten to wash the wound at once with soap and running water for 15 minutes, then go to the nearest health facility for rabies vaccine as soon as possible. Tell the health worker what animal it was and where. The Suspected Rabies Exposure guide covers the next steps.

What if people are hurt as well?
Help for people always comes first. The Kemenkes medical emergency service, Public Safety Center (PSC) 119, takes calls from mobile and landline phones, and its website also lists 112 for life-threatening conditions. The 112 service is run by local governments, so it works only where it has been set up.
